Home to six UNESCO World Heritage sites, a visit to Puglia isn't complete without a visit to at least one of its many historic sites which showcase the region's rich history, spectacular architecture and natural beauty. To help build your itinerary during your visit we've compiled a list of notable sites within driving proximity to Villa Torre Bianca.
Alberobello
Known for its unique trulli houses, Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a glimpse into traditional Apulian architecture and history. Approximately a 25 minute drive from Villa Torre Bianca, be prepared to see large crowds during the summer months. The town's trulli houses are open daily but note that some may have reduced hours on Sundays.
Ostuni
Referred to as the "White City" or " La città bianca", Ostuni is a stunning hilltop town in the province of Brindisi with whitewashed limestone buildings, narrow alleys, and historic churches dating back centuries. The white buildings are surrounded by a landscape of olive groves, resulting in a truly picturesque setting. Approximately a 45 minute drive from the Villa, note that cars are mostly forbidden in the old town area so plan to park on the outskirts of town and explore on foot.
Lecce
Famous for its baroque architecture, Lecce is often called the "Florence of the South." The Basilica di Santa Croce is a prime example showcasing intricate sculptures, grand columns and an opulent gold-painted ceiling and rose window façade. Climb the Lecce Bell Tower for breathtaking views of the city and surrounding landscape. A 1.5hr drive away, make it a day trip and plan to explore this culturally rich city.
Castel del Monte
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Castel del Monte is a unique octagonal castle built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II. The fortress is an octagonal prism with an octagonal tower at each corner. Both floors of the design feature eight rooms and an eight-sided courtyard sits at the center. From Villa Torre Bianca, it is approximately a 1.5hr drive to visit this remarkable example of medieval military architecture.
Matera
A 1hr 15min drive away, Matera is worth a visit for its ancient cave dwellings known as Sassi di Matera, which are among the oldest inhabited caves in the world and offer a fascinating look into prehistoric settlement patterns. Matera's history dates back over 10,000 years, making it one of Italy's oldest settlements and offering a unique glimpse into Italy's past with its well-preserved structures and fascinating underground networks. The city's labyrinth of streets are adorned with charming cafes, artisan shops and panoramic viewpoints.
